The third season of “Bridgerton” will be about the love story of Penelope and Colin

Queen Charlotte can choose her diamond, but Penelope will be the character who really shines in the third season of “Bridgerton. “

The hit Netflix series will focus on the romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) in season three – and the news comes from Lady Whistledown herself.

“As Lady Whistledown, I’ve been keeping a big secret for quite some time … but I can finally tell you that @bridgertonnetflix’s third season is the story of Colin and Penelope,” Coughlan announced on Instagram Monday.

The decision to cover the romance between Colin and “Pen” (who also appears to be the mostly unknown and infamous author of the Lady Whisledown’s Society Papers ton of gossip) may surprise fans of Julia Quinn’s romance novels, about which the show is based.

In the “Bridgerton” book series, each novel focuses on the love story of one of the Bridgerton brothers. The third novel centers on Benedict Bridgerton and the surprising love he finds. The story of Penelope and Colin unfolds book four, called “Mr. Bridgerton in love”.

Jess Brownell, the new showrunner of the Netflix adaptation, explained to Variety because the show will diverge from the order of Quinn’s novels.

“I feel like, especially in the last season, there are these moments of tension between them where it’s like Colin is getting close to the point where he almost realizes that Penelope has feelings for him but doesn’t get there,” Brownell said. “Instead of stepping on that dynamic, we wanted to push it into their season. It really seemed like the perfect time to start.

Both characters have been around since the first season. Although the show never focused on their relationship, it was always absolutely clear that Penelope’s feelings for Colin could be described by her heart emoji. Colin, however, has only expressed strong feelings for Penelope’s cousin Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), and for talking about her about her travels to Greece.

But a heartbreaking scene at the end of Season 2 – in which Penelope hears Colin tell her friends he would never woo her – seems like breeding ground for a burgeoning romance that promises to be juicy enough to be covered in the pages of. Lady Papers of the Whistledown Society.

Let’s hope Colin finally gives Penelope the respect she deserves, despite her feared yellow dresses.
