ABC health expert Dr. Norman Swan was accused of “Covid bugbear” after warning that 2022 was “the worst year of the pandemic.”
2GB host Ben Fordham unleashed a vicious removal of Dr. Norman Swan, calling the ABC health expert a “Covid fear” suffering from “relevance deprivation syndrome”.
Fordham was responding to Dr. Swan’s comments on ABC News Breakfast Tuesday, where the Health report the host said 2022 was “the worst year of the pandemic” and that the number of people dying was “plane crashes every week”.
“With the release of these new sub-variants, we are increasing our vulnerability, a lot of people are getting infected,” he said.
“Many people are dying. More than 5,000 this year could end up being 13,000 in one year. A bad flu season is 1500. This is the worst year of the pandemic and nobody talks about it. “
Three new Omicron sub-variants known as BA.2.12.1, BA.4 and BA.5 have recently been detected in Australia.
The new strains appear to be more transmissible but there is no evidence to suggest they are more serious.
Dr Swan said not enough people have been able to access the antiviral drugs Paxlovid and Lagevrio, intended to reduce the severity of the disease.
“The people who might be taking them aren’t,” he said. “This is a system problem trying to provide health care to people.”
He added that “at the moment there is no transparency”.
“We have no idea who is dying, whether they have had antivirals or not, we don’t see systemic studies of these deaths to find out how we could actually prevent them,” he said.
Host Lisa Millar pointed out that Australia is doing well compared to the rest of the world.
“We are benefiting from a high vaccination rate, which is why we are getting a low death rate, but the absolute numbers are high,” said Dr. Swan. “These are plane crashes every week … If these were children there would be riots in the streets.”
Speaking on his Wednesday morning program, Fordham said it was “safe to say there is no fearsome bigger than Dr. Norman Swan, the ABC resident Covid bugbear.”
“I think he must be bored, because we’ve learned to live with the coronavirus, so it’s not as relevant as it once was,” he said.
“We are trying to get on with our lives after losing two years of our lives, so Dr. Swan has come from the long run and launched another scary Covid scare campaign.”
Fordham said “forget the fact” that Australia has one of the lowest death rates and one of the highest vaccination rates in the world.
“Dr. Norman Swan wants to take us back to the bad old days,” he said.
“He can’t let go. This is a chronic case of relevance deprivation syndrome. I’m a little worried about him because maybe those daily ABC appearances are starting to dry up, maybe he hates that we’ve all moved on. He has a problem. addictive, dependent on the fear of peddling.
The 2GB host said Australians “know the coronavirus is still around, causing major problems in supply chains and impacting the workforce, but we have found that we can’t be locked up forever.” .
“Blockages are just as bad,” he said.
He pointed out that of the 139,000 active cases in NSW, nearly 99% were mild.
“You don’t hear that often from Dr. Norman Swan, do you?” He said.
“Yes, there have been many deaths, 285 in the past seven days, 5,000 so far in 2022, each tragic. But this is not just an Australian problem, it is happening all over the world. I wonder, does Dr. Swan want us to follow China’s lead and deceive people in their homes? Norman Swan will not let go of the fear campaign. “
He added that the odds of a child dying from Covid in Australia were 0.001%.
“We know it’s dangerous, we know it’s contagious, but we’ve been through plagues, pandemics, recessions, depressions, world wars and terrorism, and Australia has overwhelmingly decided to stay calm and move on,” he said.
Mind you, he got one thing right in his ABC appearance yesterday. Dr Swan said, “I think people are just fed up.” Yes, they are, not only with the coronavirus but also with alarmists like you “.
