Polk County mom gives birth to “premature baby” 16 weeks early

ATLANTA, Georgia (CBS46) – A Polk County couple celebrates Mother’s Day earlier than expected after having their baby nearly four months early.

Engaged couple Kayla Weiss and Austyn Hopkins weren’t exactly planning a baby when they found out they were pregnant in December.

“It was amazing, it was very surprising. We weren’t expecting that, “Hopkins said.

And they certainly didn’t expect to celebrate Mother’s Day as new parents.

“It’s just crazy for me because four weeks ago I was thinking, ‘Okay, would I technically celebrate Mother’s Day?’ even though she wasn’t born, and now she was born and I’m a mother, ”Weiss said.

At the end of April, Kayla’s doctors realized she had to bring her due date significantly earlier.

“I went to the doctor and it was a regular visit and my blood pressure was 190 out of 110, and I’m like I’m close to having a seizure, you need to go to the hospital,” Weiss said.

Kayla had preeclampsia, a dangerous health complication caused by hypertension that can lead to serious or even fatal complications for mother and baby.

“August 8 was its due date and we got it on April 23,” Weiss said.

Paisley Scott Hopkins was born weighing only 14 ounces and was only 9 inches long. He is still in NICU in Chattanooga and has grown slowly, now weighing just over a pound.

“It’s in a little box that you can put your hands in just to touch it,” Austyn said.

Kayla and Austyn and now look forward to the moment when they can truly hug and kiss their baby girl.

“I think it’s going to be very emotional for me,” Weiss said.

“It will be very exciting,” Austyn agreed.

The couple say they will be spending their first Mother’s Day in the hospital with Paisley and that the family will come to celebrate with them.
