About half a million people volunteered to work with the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) on election day next week.

PPCRV national president Myla Villanueva said most of the volunteers will serve as poll observer and voter assistance desk staff in various dioceses across the country.

“It is important for us to be present in the districts to be witnesses of the truth, whatever it is,” said Villanueva. “We are present to be witnesses of the truth”.

This was stated by the head of the PPCRV during a recent meeting with the volunteers of the Archdiocesan Council for Electoral Reforms of Lipa (LACER).

The other volunteers, according to her, will be assigned to the PPCRV Command Center for its unofficial parallel count at the University of Sto. Tomas in Manila from 9 to 20 May.

He said the volunteers will serve as coders, manpower for their call centers, ushers and other functions to aid in efficient operations.

The command center is where the poll watchdog receives electronic election results on their transparency server.

As the accredited citizen arm of the Electoral Commission, one of PPCRV’s tasks is to ensure that the data in the hard copy matches that in the electronic election declaration.

While they will work closely with Comelec, Villanueva said she will continue to support its mission of ensuring credible and honest elections.

“So we will trust but we will also check,” he added.
