Volkswagen T-Roc 140TSI Sport review from 2022

This sweet, steering European SUV is a must-try for potential buyers who love to drive, but not everything is up to par.

Small SUVs are all the rage, they are suitable for the city as a hatchback or five-door car, but they benefit from a higher ride height and better forward vision.

We will take a look at VW’s T-Roc 140TSI which will be updated soon.


The two-tier Volkswagen T-Roc range starts at around $ 40,000 drive-away for the 110TSI model and tops at around $ 48,000 for the sporty-flavored 140TSI version tested here. The 140TSI is running low before an updated version arrives in August, so you may be able to get a deal.

The extra cash gives you a powerful turbocharged petrol engine, all-wheel drive and a dual-clutch sports automatic transmission.

It’s a high asking price to get into the T-Roc range, but the 140TSI is on par with a similarly equipped Mazda CX-30. You’ll find cheaper range toppers with the Kia and Hyundai badges, though.

Aimed at urban drivers, the T-Roc blends funky style with a decent level of support kit.

It has desirable elements such as LED lighting, red interior lighting and 18-inch alloy wheels.

An eight-inch central touchscreen is compatible with wired and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and in front of the driver is a 10.25-inch digital display.

Both rows are served by multiple USB-C charging points, but the lack of a wireless device charging pad is disappointing.

VW covers its vehicles with the industry standard 5 years / km unlimited. Maintenance is expensive at $ 3,367 for five years, but upfront payment at the time of purchase will cost $ 2,600 for five services.


Inside passengers are welcomed by rigid fabric seats with manual adjustments. Our test car was equipped with the $ 3,500 luxury package which brings heated leather-covered sports seats, a panoramic sunroof and an electric tailgate for easy access to the boat.

A leather-wrapped, three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel and a gear lever with red contrast stitching are a nice touch.

The cabin is a disappointment by VW standards, though, as there’s plenty of hard-feeling, cheap plastic. Recapture a few spots with the rear seat vents and soft-touch seat backrests.

The increased ground clearance makes it easier for older passengers to get in and out and improve forward vision.

There is a fair amount of tire roar on poor quality road surfaces. The solid suspension makes the steering SUV smoother, but you’ll feel the bumps and lumps more.


The T-Roc is packed with active safety aids. The car automatically applies the brakes if it detects a potential collision, will take you back to your lane if you move away, and let you know if another car is in your blind spot. An alarm will also sound if a car approaches from the side while reversing.

Front and rear parking sensors and a reversing camera assist in tight spaces, while six airbags add additional peace of mind.


The powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine delivers a whopping 140kW and 320Nm. That torque kicks in early in the rev range, delivering plenty of off-the-shelf oomph.

It’s mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch car that appeals to the sporty nature of the car, but can be a bit taken at lower speeds.

Sharp and fast steering, coupled with the all-wheel drive handle, makes light work on a winding county road.

The suspension borders on the stationary side on pockmarked city streets, but provides excellent body control in corners.

VW claims fuel consumption of 7.2 l / 100km and demands more expensive premium petrol.

Sporty SUV with a powerful engine but a cabin that is anything but stimulating takes away some of the shine.



It can’t compete with VW’s driving experience but has a longer seven-year warranty.


Elegantly styled with a healthy list of equipment. Older, thirsty non-turbo engine.


Massive increase in performance and capacity for a not very high extra expense. It’s not that easy to live with it on a day-to-day basis.
